Saltburn Pier
The inspirations for the following four paintings come from memories of images Jim has witnessed, whilst in the sea at Saltburn. He has often experienced some beautiful episodes of late afternoon light, looking back to shore and glimpses of the buildings mysteriously appear on the hill, through a sea fret, or the woods in the valley. The heights of the waves are accentuated from this low vantage point, and the pier almost abstract. This short series of paintings seek to portray the turbulence, energy and constant motion of the water, with waves breaking up the shapes and the light catching the spray.

Big wave beach, Sanna
When I was a child we used to go to Sanna every year for a holiday and we called the beach 'Big wave beach', since my return to Ardnamurchan to paint, I have always taken my surfboard with me, in the hope that there would be a good wave, but I haven't seen any waves to surf on yet.

South westerly storm - Ardnamurchan Point
Painting at Ardnamurchan lighthouse in October 2011. It was a week of weather gusting from the South West. This often brought strong winds, but the swell only seemed to arrive with the high tide. When it did, it was well worth the wait. There was so much energy at the point and the clouds added to the drama surging across from Mull
Now in Millbank House House of Lords, in Parliamentary Art Collection - a publicly owned national collection SOLD

The power and the mighty sea
The black rock at the base of Ardnamurchan Lighthouse is gabbro rock, formed from magna that slowly solidified below the earth's surface when Ardnamurchan's second volcano stopped errupting. At sea level the rock appears fawn coloured, covered in tiny barnacles, but when the tide rises above the banacle line, the expolsive impact of the clear turquoise sea on the shining jet black wet rocks is a sight that constantly changes and constantly inspires Jim.

High winds, high waves - Alasdale Bay
It's not only the seals that show off their skills in stormy conditions, the gulls also fly low over the waves almost cruising, or perform group acrobatics cutting their flight direction effortlessly above the foam. Jim almost got stranded on rocks watching the action instead of the incoming tide.

Storm blowing in
Painting on the rocks at Ardnamurchan. Jim loves painting in the stormy weather here, there is so much energy, it takes him a day or two to be fully prepared for the elements, warm waterproof clothing and plastic covers to stop things getting too wet, and plenty of bulldog clips to stop painting and palette blowing away and on this day it was also a case of finding a spot that didn't blow him away.

Where the seals sing - Barra
There was so much action happening this day. watching the seals swimming in this cauldron and they made it look like a walk in the park.

Strong westerly winds at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse
This was an amazing day, enormous plumes of spray rose at least 20 metres high into the sky as the waves hit the rocks below the lighthouse. As the sunlight shone through the spray, rainbows of colour formed and were blown away by the wind .

Ardnamurchan Point
This was a blustery day in March, the winds were picking up and bringing in a nice swell. Over the sea Tiree gets the full force of the Atlantic swell with some very good surfing.
