I like to work directly on my oil paintings, but in recent years I have also dedicated some time to sketching. Without the expectation of producing a piece of work to show at a gallery, I can really enjoy the experience and environment, and I find the process of sketching really hones my observation skills. I’ve particularly enjoyed documenting the harbours, boats and machinery of the fishing industry on the coast of Sutherland and Caithness.

One of my favourite spots is Port Swingo, a stones throw from our croft. It is a natural little cove on the west side of Farr Bay.
Sandside harbour is one of many interesting stone built harbours around Caithness. It has two L shaped piers, with walkways made with large heavy flagstones, surfaces now uneven with wear, mottled with lichens and edges
